I’m fascinated with wasps. My shed is full of them. They build their nests by gluing a stem to a ceiling or wall and then adding hexagonal cells to accommodate the larval babies soon deposited there by the queen. And they're always busy. They bring supplies like food to the larvae or chewed wood from a nearby tree to make paper for the nest. On their final approach they identify themselves through chemical and visual means, sometimes flying off again after receiving a message from the group.

Any movement or vibration that threatens the nursery (like my approaching stick) causes them to go into "super alert" mode. If the danger is urgent, scouts on the perimeter fly off to intercept the intruder. If their reconnaissance determines that you're a threat, they sting, but if not they calm down and return to the nest.

I walked into the shed this morning to get a ladder and noticed that, if left undisturbed, they will fly close to me — even touch me — without stinging.  It’s a curious feeling to get brushed by a wasp and it reminded me of Prem Rawat’s recent comment that people, if undisturbed, will naturally seek peace. I thought about it and decided that, even when it comes to wasps, it was true!

And while the worker wasps bring chewed food for the larvae, the larvae in turn produce a sweet liquid they feed to the workers! Symbiosis, another similarity. When I see Prem Rawat's efforts to share a heartfelt message and then see the outpouring of gratitude from people who, like me, have benefited from his message, it seems to me a natural and beautiful process.

People back in the day used to get their information from nature. There was no internet, no telephone... not even books. At least not ones they knew how to read. They worked on a farm and watched the sky and noticed the birds and drew their inspiration from the natural phenomena around them. Nowadays we have more sources of information than we know how to deal with but the core issue is still about that simple heartfelt feeling. The information we really need informs us, like nature itself or the message of Prem Rawat, that peace is a natural state for human beings and if we all work together it can be a very rewarding enterprise.

  1. Hi there - liked your story very much. I had a wasps nest on my allotment (underground where they can also build). At first I was alarmed but gradually came to realise that they weren't that bothered about me and would come and go about their business peaceably with me close by provided they didn't feel threatened. But I also know that if they were under threat their focus would shift and become more aggressive. It's true what you say about people and how we are. Sometimes I get out of sorts and mistakenly feel threatened, then I feel like a wasp too! In the short time I spent with them, I grew to admire these industrious little creatures.
