With the information superhighway, Wi-Fi-capable mobile phones, upwards of 500 television channels and innumerable media gadgets at our disposal, does anyone listen to the radio anymore? Apparently in Ireland they do, and what some find is a unique programme called ”From the Heart.”

Claremorris Community Radio, the station broadcasting the programme, is the only community radio station available in this area of rolling hills, woods, and impressive lakes. Located in County Mayo, Claremorris is a charming town steeped in the rich history of western Ireland. The programme, featuring the message of Prem Rawat along with other added materials, is now broadcast twice a week there: live on Sunday mornings and repeated once before the next show takes place.

Over two years ago, local resident Christine Lynn, the woman who started it all, mustered her courage and decided to take a chance. ”I definitely went out of my comfort zone the first few times I went on air, but you get used to it”, she says. ”Starting on a local community radio is good practice since the presenters on all the other programmes are volunteers like me and also had little or no experience when they started.”

The station has an audience of around 3,000, with potentially 9,000 more listeners over the 10-mile radius it covers. But there really is no way of knowing exactly how many people are listening to the programme; the station also simulcasts on the Internet, extending its reach far beyond the county line.

”We’ve had emails from around the world”, says Christine, citing obvious evidence of the broadcast’s vast reach. ”People find the programme in so many cities and countries; it’s quite amazing. The very first time I broadcasted a note was sent to me from Australia by a regular listener to the station. They just wanted to say how much they enjoyed Words of Peace.”

Listeners regularly send in poetry, stories, and music they would like to be shared, which Christine often uses. The bulk of her materials, however, comes from the WOPG and TPRF websites as well as music she has collected over the years.

”We hope to do some telephone interviews in the near future so people can talk about what they’ve learned from Prem Rawat’s message and how it has affected them”, Christine adds.

Recently, Christine has asked other local volunteers to join her in reading from ADI Magazine and Inspire, an online newsletter, as well as the writings of centuries-old poets such as Rumi and Kabir.

”Local people have approached me to say that they really enjoy the show overall and Prem Rawat’s message in particular. They tell me they tune in every week to listen. One gentleman said he thought it should be advertised in all the local papers and that an article be done to direct people to the programme. We are following up on that suggestion.”

According to Christine, the station manager is happy with the programme and, as the listening audience continues to grow, she may be able to broadcast longer excerpts from Prem Rawat’s addresses. At this point, she mainly reads short excerpts of his words and airs clips of his speeches set to music.

”Community radio is a great way to reach people whom I might not normally come in contact with and who might find what they are looking for in this message.

”It’s also a lot of fun for me”, she adds. ”And that’s a great reason to participate.”

  5. About a year before I received Knowledge in 1971, I spent 6 months in Ireland and a few weeks in County Mayo. Croagh Padraigh, pronounced "Cro-Patrick" is the mountain where St. Patrick gave his famous sermon about the shamrock and the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. A beautiful place! I'm going to look up the program.
  6. Hi Christine, I am inspired by what you have done. We have a local radio station here in Falmouth Cornwall and since I have some experience of broadcasting and poetry reading I would love to do something similar. Please could you let let me know a little more about what is involved. I imagine getting the materials together would take some time? Best wishes Josie

  10. I love hearing about Prem Rawat. I like to refer to him as an "expert in inner peace." I love what he has to say and I can honestly say that he seems to be the clearest person I know - at least on the matter of inner peace. Keep it coming!
