VAVUNIYA, Sri Lanka, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF) has donated US$20,000 to the Jeeva Shakthi Society for aid to Vavuniya, Northern Province, Vavuniya District of Sri Lanka in an effort to provide nutrition to those displaced by civil war in the region. The grant will aid the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) currently occupying camps and settlements for a two-month period.

"Our hearts go out to all the people in Sri Lanka who have been affected by the war," states Linda Pascotto, President of The Prem Rawat Foundation. "We are especially concerned for those who have been displaced and have been living in camps and settlements, sometimes facing severe food shortages and often not getting the nutrition they need. It must be so debilitating to fight the ravages of war and in a weakened state."

DSC_0006.jpgThese camps are the result of the decades-long Sri Lanka Civil War between the government forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), commonly known as the Tamil Tigers, who have fought for an independent homeland for the country's ethnic Tamil minority since 1983. Since May of this year, many of the displaced persons living in camps have contemplated returning to their homes. "This grant from TPRF will feed 540 Internally Displaced Persons in the Vavuniya region, providing them with healthy meals of vegetables, eggs and lentils for at least two months, so that they can begin to get back on their feet again and rebuild their lives," Mrs. Pascotto further states.

Shamila Malawaraarachchi, Treasurer of Jeeva Shakthi Society, expressed appreciation. "There are hundreds of thousands of IDPs in Vavuniya camps. It was a very difficult problem to provide nutritious food, and they are in dire need. Thanks to the grant by The Prem Rawat Foundation (TPRF), it has enabled a large number of IDPs who are really in need of nutritious food to get it."

  3. Excellent effort by TPRF. I have worked in Sri Lanka for an humanitarian organisation previously and know the plight of the displaced especially children and mothers in the IDP camps. More effort is needed to bring peace and stability and support to rebuild their lives. This is good start. We will support this from Germany. Mani
